By former Coca Cola CEO Bryan Dyson
Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air.
You name them - work, family, health, friends and spirit - and you’re keeping all of these in the air.
You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back.
But the other four balls - family, health, friends and spirit - are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same.
You must understand that and strive for balance in your life.
My takeaway: The next time your boss is pushing you too hard, just tell him to juggle your balls.

While I like the metaphor, my consternation comes with the fact that some idiot seems to have chained half the balls together, making it tricky to throw one without the other.

Yeah, pretty sure my pastor (whose wife is also a pastor) would argue it’s just a big hula hoop :P

And, being a CEO, it’s a lock that he knows from experience - having damaged or broken a few balls himself...

The best thing I’ve ever done for maintaining work-life balance is refuse to turn on work email notifications on my phone. I have my work email on my phone but the notifications are off. If there’s something I know might need my attention outside of work hours, I’ll take a peek at it, but otherwise if someone emails me outside of work hours, I’ll get back to them during work hours.

There is some merit in a hula hoop concept.
